EVENDALE COUNCIL RECREATION, FIRE AND POLICE COMMITTEE MEETING
November 4, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.
Present were Council members, Bill Puthoff, Jeff Albrinck, Police Chief Neil Korte, Fire Chief Mike Hauck, and Recreation Director David Nichols. Also in attendance were Chief Financial Officer, Cynthia Caracci, Assistant to the Mayor; David Elmer, Mayor Don Apking, John Ranz and residents, Matt Stroh and Michael Stroh.
Recreation
- Recreation Director, Dave Nichols, reported that there will be a hiring ordinance on the November agenda due to the new assignments within the department. As the new hire is the nephew of Bill Puthoff and since John Ranz has resigned from counsel, and has not yet been reappointed, Mr. Nichols expressed concern that we may not have the requisite votes to pass the ordinance by emergency. We will consult with Village Solicitor, Tim Burke, as to whether Mr. Puthoff is required to recuse himself from his vote.
- The Indoor Spa. The spa and the fitness center is currently under repair. It is estimated that it will re-open sometime in late December. Pictures of the sub-structure confirm that the condition of the support for the spa was in serious disrepair.
Police Department
- Chief Korte had nothing new to report other than the ongoing impact of the regional heroine epidemic. He wants to stress that residents need to be very careful in securing all their personal items in and around their house, including their vehicles.
Fire Department
- Fire Chief Hauck reported that the new ambulance has been delivered and that they are currently addressing a few minor issues. Training on the new ambulance is progressing.
- Chief Hauck reported on the Tower 40 sutphen repairs. Currently, the repairs are scheduled for the week of November 14 and they should take up to eight to ten days. Sutphen has been very resistant in providing details as to the exact cause of the malfunctions. Before putting the ladder truck back into service, it will go through an extensive testing to make sure that the unit is safe.
Other Business
- Matt Stroh, a local resident and Eagle Scout candidate, attended the meeting to follow-up on his Eagle Scout project wherein he is putting together emergency kits for the elderly of Evendale. It is his intent to create 25 kits and to provide them to local residents in case of an emergency or power outage. After our last meeting, he was to follow-up with potential donors and he has confirmed that he has received generous donations from Walmart, Kroger, NAPA and Aldi’s. Chief Hauck confirmed that he has funds within his budget to help complete the kits.
- Mayor Apking updated the committee on potential property acquisition, concerns with the traffic patterns at Glendale Milford and Plainfield Road, and the need for road repairs near Evendale Drive.
Upon a Motion by Bill Puthoff, seconded by Jeff Albrinck, the meeting adjourned at 7:15.
